Studio B Thanks Berks County Community Foundation for Support

What fun! Studio B treated members of the board of Berks County Community Foundation (BCCF) to a tasty dinner catered by next door neighbor Sweet Beginnings, introductions to the current fine art exhibit--The Farm featuring the works of over 50 artists--and to directors Susan Biebuyck and Amanda Condict,  and a gift of art--Dave Larson's painting The Smith Farm" which was awarded Best in Show by juror Heather Heilman-Loercher last month featuring the Sacred Oak of Oley. 

Dave's painting will reside in BCCF's new location and serve as a thank you gift for BCCF's financial support for Studio B. BCCF's grant paid the rent for Studio B's first year's home at 39A East Philadelphia Avenue, Boyertown.

Studio B hosted the Boyertown Rotary Club recently and will welcome the Boyertown Lions Club and the Boyertown Junior Women's Club in an effort to spread the word about the studio's availability for meetings, gatherings, and party events.

Arts Education Central to Students' Learning

My favorite thought comes from Tom Horne, Arizona's state superintendent of public instruction: "When you think about the purposes of education, there are three. We're preparing kids for jobs. We're preparing them to be citizens. And we're teaching them to be human beings who can enjoy the deeper forms of beauty. The third is as important as the other two."

Also..."Involvement in the arts is associated with gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skill. Arts learning can also improve motivation, concentration, confidence, and teamwork. A 2005 report by the Rand Corporation about the visual arts argues that the intrinsic pleasures and stimulation of the art experience do more than sweeten an individual's life...'connect people more deeply to the world and open them to new ways of seeing,' creating the foundation to forge social bonds and community cohesion."

Open Mic Night, Thursday, February 12, 2009 Honors John Updike

Join lovers of language for Second Thursday Open Mic Night at Boyertown's Hard Bean Cafe, East Philadelphia Avenue, beginning at 7:00, to honor Reading, PA's favorite son, writer John Updike. To honor Updike's passing, bring a short (five minute) piece to read that highlights his extraordinary ability to describe ordinary things. Updike's American realism is often rooted in Berks County settings. 

The evening is free and open to the public and encourages new and experienced writers to read original poetry and prose. Contact Jodi Corbett at jacorbet@comcast.net. Studio B, a Beautiful Place to Meet (and Eat)

Plan your next club meeting, catered dinner, birthday or engagement party surrounded by some of the area's most talented artists. Programs can include an artist discussing works on display, Studio B's mission and activities or a topic suggested by the participating artist.
